Ann O’Delia Diss Debar is one of the world’s great mysteries for which there is no start date and no end date. It is as if she mysteriously appears one day, lives an extraordinary life, and then simply vanishes again, for there is no record of her birth or her death. She claimed to be the illegitimate daughter of King Louis I of Bavaria, and the notorious dancer and consort, Lola Montez, but it is more likely that she was the child of a political refugees called Salomen, and was given the name Editha at birth. She grew up in Kentucky, USA, and was reportedly a wayward and difficult child, hellbent on getting her own way and oblivious to the attempts at restraint from her parents. So bad was her conduct that her parents sought the advice of a doctor who said that she was the victim of an ‘unholy passion’ and that she would probably grow out of it as she got older. She didn’t.

When she came of age Diss Debar left home and disappeared from her parents’ sight, randomly reappearing several years later in Baltimore posing as the Countess Landsfelt and Baroness Rosenthal, a member of the European Aristocracy, enjoying all the favours of society life that the well-to-do of Baltimore possessed. She was immensely popular among the young men and women of the new American Republic, who were only too delighted to have a European Countess among their number.
